Babylon Village, Long Island, NY
Babylon Village is a little jewel of a town located about 40
miles east of New York City and approximately 50 miles from the world
famous Hamptons. It is approximately 2.5 square miles and has 12,500
residents. The village was incorporated in 1893, but it's history
dates back much further to the 1700's.
The town's name comes from one of it's earliest residents. In
1803 Nathaniel Conklin built his home in the village. At this time
Babylon was still known as Huntington South and was home to some rough and
rowdy taverns and hotels frequented by fishermen and bay men.

As the story goes - Conklin's mother complained that her new
town was just "another Babylon" apparently a reference to her
new noisy neighbors ... and the name stuck!
In the late 1800's Babylon became a popular destination in the summer
months. Tourists came to swim and go boating in the lakes, bays and nearby
ocean. |
| This spawned what is known as the "hotel age" for
Babylon Village. Some of the most beautiful hotels on the South
Shore were in Babylon, the largest of them being the 350-room Argyle which
was located on Babylon's scenic Argyle Lake. Although the hotels are
gone today, the village retains much of it's charm from the past. |
 |
| In the shopping district, there are many restaurants, shops
and businesses. This area has a distinctly vintage feel, with it's
Victorian-era light posts, brick walkways and historical buildings.
In the surrounding areas there are beautiful old homes, many restored to
their former glory. |
 |
| But the main attraction for Babylon has and I expect will
always be it's location. Located right on the Great South Bay, and
only a short hop to the areas sandy ocean beaches make for a town that is
truly a seaside delight. |
